Local heritage book of AthenstedtAspenstedt is located in the northern foothills of the Harz Mountain range, approximately 11 kilometres west of Halberstadt and directly on the south side of the Huys in the district Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. Approximately 400 inhabitants live in this small village. The village of Aztekendrop (Athenstedt) is shown on an old map from the church as a fief with special rights of Lothar von Süpplingen. Probably the place already existed in 875. Athenstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1187. In 1564 the village counted 35 landlords. Until 1648 Athenstedt belonged to the diocese of Halberstadt and then came to the principality of Halberstadt. The changes in agriculture, especially in the last third of the 19th century, had a visible impact on the village landscape in Athenstedt. Most of the buildings in the centre of Athenstedt date from this period. The spellings of some surnames were different to their modern variants. For example, a gentleman, born Kiene, is documented in his death certificate Kühne. Another example is: Newy - Naewy - Naewi - Newig – Naewig, or Hary - Harig. Also, the spelling of the first names can sometimes confuse, e.g. Cord, Curt, Curdt, Cordt or Kurt. Sometimes not easy. This local family history book, should be used as a research aid only and, is very probably not complete, as there are many gaps in the church archives. It is not a binding document. Do you have any comments or additions/changes? I would be very happy to receive them. |
